1/ Don’t take on too much

Challenging, ok, overextending, no. For the start, 400-500 meters of vert are totally sufficient and of course the terrain should also not be too steep or demanding so kids can first master the technique.

2/ Beautiful weather + powder = good moods

Beautiful weather and fresh powder make for a good mood and also keep downhills much more relaxed. My tip: Be flexible in planning. If you have any doubts better to wait for a nicer winter day. First impressions can make it or break it!

3/ Safe skiing is mandatory!

Safe skiing is a must before kids can head out on a ski tour. Otherwise, problems could quickly develop in the backcountry. In the beginning, I would nevertheless recommend taking on the first tour close to a groomed slope or in a ski resort.

4/ Variety is king

Children want to discover the world and follow their playful instincts. Adults should take that into considering when ski touring. Short detours to a great viewpoint, a detour through the woods, or short technique exercises make for good variety.

5/ Yummy goodies will always motivate

Motivation is the be-all-end-all when you are out with kids in the mountains – whether on a ski tour or on foot. Looking forward to a yummy goodie or a snack can pep them up quickly. When the first ski tour can be combined with a stop at a hut, all the better.

6/ Teach avalanche awareness playfully

In general: Only go out on tours when the avalanche risk is low. Little ones should also be equipped with an avalanche transceiver. Looking for somebody buried can be practiced playfully: From experience, kids will have fun looking for a buried backpack filled with treats.

7/ The more, the better!

My basic rule for every mountain outing with children is: The more, the better! Kids can also keep themselves busy with each other. The older ones take responsibility for the younger ones and in the end everybody has much more fun.

8/ Child-appropriate equipment

When acquiring gear, one should look for high quality and long-lasting durability. The younger siblings will also find pleasure in the jackets, skis and boots, or you will be able to re-sell them well.

Aside from the right gear, several other factors are also critical to be sure ski touring becomes a free time adventure for the whole family. He reveals his top eight tips and tricks for kids to discover for themselves the joy and ease of ski touring.
